Racecar Challenge with Beaver Works

The competition, which is hosted by Pierce – American College of Greece, is based on the middle-school race car program miniRACECAR designed and offered by the Beaver Works Summer Institute at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and MIT Lincoln Laboratory:https://beaverworks.ll.mit.edu/CMS/bw/bwsi

The competition’s objective is to provide Gymnasio students with an opportunity to work in teams, to acquire knowledge in a project-based manner, to strengthen their skills in programming, robotics and technology, regardless of prior experience or knowledge, and to develop skills such as problem solving, creativity and teamwork.

Participating teams will be asked to program a robotic car which will move autonomously on a racetrack.

The team that will be distinguished in the Greek competition will have the opportunity to represent Greece in the international competition that will be held at the Beaver Works Summer Institute – Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the USA. The selected team that will participate in the international competition will have the additional opportunity to watch the program of the last week of BWSI on its premises, before the final competition.

Autonomous Racecar Program in collaboration the Beaver Works Summer Institute

Together with the American College of Greece – Pierce and the Moraitis School, Mathisi introduced the middle-school race car program miniRACECAR designed and offered by the Beaver Works Summer Institute from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Lincoln Laboratory. The pilot program aims to help students develop their knowledge and skills in programming, robotics and technology, linking theory to practice. Students from Gymnasium and 1st Lyceum receive instructions in the following subjects:

  Programming (Python)

  Computer Vision (OpenCV)

  Robotics (Racecar)

This year, both ACG – Pierce and the Moraitis School will have the opportunity to have one team virtually participate in BWSI’s final project and competition week ending August 1, 2021. It will be the first time that Greek students will participate in that competition

Drawing on its resources and experience, and in collaboration with local educators, Mathisi is developing a subset of the modules it had offered in its STEM camp with the support of MIT JWEL

Educational focus

Content design

  Each module follows a sequence of sessions which reflects the project-based and cross-disciplinary approach we have adopted throughout our work.

  Each session is comprised of a combination of  i) “hard knowledge” corresponding to specific content of the national curriculum, ii)  hands-on activities where that knowledge is used or experimented, and iii) an assessment tool for the student and teacher to assess whether the knowledge of that session has been understood in the manner that allows the student to use it going forward.

Development

Beyond Mathisi’s prototyping, the modules development includes teacher play-testing and in-class testing in collaboration with teachers and educators.

In this module, students got acquainted with concepts of chemistry and biology in order to explore the issue of food…Read more consumption in our everyday life. They investigated some essential questions about energy and food and experiment using calorie-measuring devices and physical activity.

Ocean Acidification

The module focused on acidity and its effect on the ocean ecosystem,  introducing the concept of acidity with solutions, ions…Read more , and concentrations. Students were given different householdchemicals and drinks and were asked to make hypotheses as to the acidity of each solution before testing them and assess the consequences of the changing pH level on chemical and biological processes taking place in the ocean, such as carbon storage and calcification.

The Mathisi STEM Camp took place in the summer 2019 and was hosted by the Moraitis School. During the camp, students were taught in “the MIT way”, with hands-on, immersive learning. They had the opportunity to advance their knowledge in the STEM areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics and then use this knowledge to develop solutions to real problems. Students worked together to design and build innovative projects that they then shared with their communities and families. Both MIT educators and Greek educators facilitated the camp, using resources and materials developed by MIT and adapted for the STEM Camp in Greece. Members of Mathisi Initiative received support from J-WEL to design the camp and select local educators, who assisted in the delivery of the program. The Camp ran for two weeks, in the English language, and was attended by 60 students from 20 different schools.

The Camp’s first week was dedicated to learning a combination of the six science-based modules described in the boxes below and three skill-development activities (Scratch programming, electronics construction models and various tool training).

The Camp’s second week was dedicated to prototyping and building a project on the basis of the knowledge and skills acquired or developed the first week. The last day of the camp, the students presented their project to their peers and family.

We are now actively working in collaboration with BWSI and ACG – Pierce, to allow any school in Greece interested in doing so to participate in the miniRACECAR program with the potential to take part in BWSI’s final project and competition week in the summer of 2022. Student teams which will register for the miniRACECAR program, successfully complete it, and wish to aim for a participation in BWSI’s final competition week in 2022 will first participate in a national competition to be held in June, with the winning team representing Greece.

BWSI

The, Beaver Works Summer Institute  is part of Beaver Works, a joint venture between MIT Lincoln Laboratory and the MIT School of Engineering that is envisioned as an incubator for research and innovation BWSI offers rigorous, world-class STEM programs for middle and high school students from across… the United States. An increasing number of these programs include a fully virtual online preparation, open to students internationally, which is attended by participating schools during the school year starting February 1.BWSI started in 2016, with a RACECAR course, where teams of students programmed small robotic cars to autonomously navigate a racetrack. Every year, more project-based courses and more students are learning at BWSI. In 2019, BWSI created the miniRACECAR course, which was piloted for use with middle school students. In 2020 BWSI expanded again using a virtual program and now the miniRACECAR includes a simulation environment and additional lab modules. The BWSI program has expanded to more than ten courses and estimated three hundred students for summer 2021.The goal of BWSI is to improve engineering education world-wide by providing unparalleled technical content and support for free to participating non-profit institutions, including high schools and universities.

Πανελλήνιος Διαγωνισμός Ρομποτικής για μαθητές Γυμνασίου Racecar Challenge

Ο διαγωνισμός, που θα φιλοξενείται από το Pierce – American College of Greece βασίζεται στο πρόγραμμα Μέσης Εκπαίδευσης miniRACECAR, το οποίο έχει σχεδιαστεί από το Beaver Works Summer Institute του Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Σκοπός του διαγωνισμού είναι να δώσει την ευκαιρία σε μαθητές και μαθήτριες του Γυμνασίου να εργαστούν σε ομάδες, να αποκτήσουν γνώσεις με βιωματική μέθοδο, να ενισχύσουν τις ικανότητές τους στον τομέα του Προγραμματισμού, της Ρομποτικής και της Τεχνολογίας, ανεξάρτητα από προηγούμενη εμπειρία ή γνώσεις που ήδη διαθέτουν, και να καλλιεργήσουν δεξιότητες όπως επίλυσης προβλημάτων, δημιουργικότητας και ομαδοσυνεργατικότητας.

Οι συμμετέχουσες ομάδες θα κληθούν να προγραμματίσουν ένα ρομποτικό αυτοκίνητο, το οποίο θα κινείται αυτόνομα σε μία αγωνιστική πίστα.

Η ομάδα που θα διακριθεί στον ελληνικό διαγωνισμό, θα έχει τη δυνατότητα να εκπροσωπήσει τη χώρα μας στον διεθνή διαγωνισμό που θα διεξαχθεί στο Beaver Works Summer Institute του Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) στις ΗΠΑ. Η διακριθείσα ομάδα που θα συμμετάσχει στον διεθνή διαγωνισμό θα έχει την επιπλέον δυνατότητα να παρακολουθήσει το πρόγραμμα της τελευταίας εβδομάδας του BWSI στις εγκαταστάσεις του, πριν τον τελικό διαγωνισμό.

Autonomous Racecar Πρόγραμμα σε συνεργασία με το Beaver Works Summer Institute

Σε συνεργασία με το Pierce – Αμερικανικό Κολλέγιο Ελλάδος και τη Σχολή Μωραΐτη, η Μάθηση εισήγαγε το εκπαιδευτικό πρόγραμμα Μέσης Εκπαίδευσης miniRACECAR, το οποίο σχεδίασε και προσφέρει το Beaver Works Summer Institute του Lincoln Laboratory του Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Το πιλοτικό πρόγραμμα έχει ως στόχο να ενισχύσει τις γνώσεις και τις ικανότητες των μαθητών στον τομέα του προγραμματισμού, της ρομποτικής και της τεχνολογίας, συνδυάζοντας τη θεωρία με την πράξη. Μαθητές από την Α΄ Γυμνασίου έως και την Α΄ Λυκείου ασκούνται στα παρακάτω θέματα:

Κατά το τρέχον σχολικό έτος, τόσο το Pierce όσο και η Σχολή Μωραΐτη θα έχουν την ευκαιρία να συμμετάσχουν διαδικτυακά με μια ομάδα τους στο τελικό project και διαγωνισμό του BWSI την εβδομάδα που τελειώνει την 1η Αυγούστου, 2021. Θα είναι η πρώτη φορά που Έλληνες μαθητές θα συμμετάσχουν στον συγκεκριμένο διαγωνισμό.

Σχεδιασμός περιεχομένου

Η κάθε ενότητα ακολουθεί μία σειρά από “αποσπάσματα / sessions” που αντικατοπτρίζουν τη project-based και διεπιστημονική προσέγγιση που έχουμε υιοθετήσει σε όλες τις εργασίες μας.

Το κάθε «απόσπασμα» αποτελείται από έναν συνδυασμό i) «σκληρής γνώσης» (επιστημονικού περιεχομένου;) που αντιστοιχεί σε συγκεκριμένο περιεχόμενο του σχολικού προγράμματος σπουδών, ii) πρακτικών/πειραματικών δραστηριοτήτων όπου αυτή η γνώση χρησιμοποιείται ή διερευνάται, και iii) ένα εργαλείο αξιολόγησης για τον μαθητή και τον εκπαιδευτικό ώστε να αποτιμήσει εάν η γνώση αυτού του «αποσπάσματος» έχει γίνει κατανοητή με τον τρόπο που επιτρέπει στον μαθητή να τη χρησιμοποιήσει στο μέλλον.

Ανάπτυξη

Πέρα από την δημιουργία πρωτοτύπου περιεχομένου από τη Μάθηση, η ανάπτυξη των ενοτήτων περιλαμβάνει την αναθεώρηση, δοκιμές παιχνιδιού (Playtesting) από εκπαιδευτικών και δοκιμές στην τάξη σε συνεργασία με καθηγητές και εκπαιδευτικούς.

Mathisi STEM Camp@Moraitis School

Σύνοψη

Το Mathisi STEM Camp διεξήχθη το καλοκαίρι του 2019 στη Σχολή Μωραΐτη. Κατά τη διάρκεια του προγράμματος, οι μαθητές διδάχθηκαν με την «μέθοδο ΜΙΤ» με μια αλληλεπιδραστική και ολοκληρωμένη μαθησιακή προσέγγιση. Είχαν την ευκαιρία να διευρύνουν τις γνώσεις τους στα πεδία του STEM (Επιστήμη, Τεχνολογία, Μηχανική και Μαθηματικά) και στη συνέχεια να χρησιμοποιήσουν αυτές τις γνώσεις με σκοπό να αναπτύξουν λύσεις σε πραγματικά προβλήματα. Οι μαθητές δούλεψαν σε ομάδες για να σχεδιάσουν και να κατασκευάσουν καινοτόμα projects τα οποία στη συνέχεια μοιράστηκαν με την κοινότητα και τις οικογένειές τους. Τόσο οι εκπαιδευτές του ΜΙΤ όσο και οι Έλληνες εκπαιδευτικοί που συνεργάστηκαν στο θερινό πρόγραμμα χρησιμοποίησαν περιεχόμενο και υλικά που αναπτύχθηκαν από το MIT και προσαρμόστηκαν για τις ανάγκες του θερινού προγράμματος STEM στην Ελλάδα. Τα μέλη της Mathisi έλαβαν υποστήριξη από το J-WEL για το σχεδιασμό του θερινού προγράμματος και για την επιλογή εκπαιδευτικών από την Ελλάδα που υποστήριξαν την διδασκαλία του προγράμματος. Το θερινό πρόγραμμα είχε διάρκεια 2 εβδομάδων, πραγματοποιήθηκε στην αγγλική γλώσσα και συμμετείχαν σε αυτό 60 μαθητές από 20 διαφορετικά σχολεία.

Πρόγραμμα

Η πρώτη εβδομάδα του Camp ήταν αφιερωμένη στην εκμάθηση μίας επιλογής από έξι επιστημονικές ενότητες που περιγράφονται παρακάτω και σε τρεις δραστηριότητες ανάπτυξης δεξιοτήτων (προγραμματισμός με Scratch, μοντέλα ηλεκτρονικής και εκπαίδευση σε εργαλειομηχανές). Η δεύτερη εβδομάδα ήταν αφιερωμένη στη δημιουργία ενός πρωτοτύπου και την υλοποίηση μίας εργασίας με βάση τις γνώσεις και τις δεξιότητες που αναπτύχθηκαν την πρώτη εβδομάδα. Την τελευταία ημέρα του προγράμματος, οι μαθητές παρουσίασαν τις εργασίες τους στους συμμαθητές τους και την οικογένειά τους.

Internet of Things για Υγιή Φυτά

Οι μαθητές μαθαίνουν σχετικά με τις διαδικασίες των φυτών και χρησιμοποιούν αισθητήρες για τη μέτρηση και την αξιολόγηση της…Περισσότερα υγείας και της ανάπτυξης των φυτών και τη χρήση μιας απλής γλώσσας προγραμματισμού για την εξ’ αποστάσεως παρακολούθηση και βελτιστοποίηση της κατάστασής τους, ενισχύοντας την κατανόηση των δυνατοτήτων του Internet of Things, της υγείας των φυτών και διαφορετικών μορφών ενέργειας.

Ανεμογεννήτριες και Design Thinking

H δραστηριότητα εισάγει τους μαθητές στο θέμα της αξιοποίησης της δύναμης του ανέμου για την παραγωγή ενέργειας και…Περισσότερα διερευνά κοινά θέματα που σχετίζονται με ανεμογεννήτριες, χρησιμοποιώντας βασικές έννοιες της φυσικής και της ηλεκτρολογίας. Στην ενότητα, οι μαθητές εξοικειώνονται με τη μεθοδολογία του Design Thinking, και χρησιμοποιούν τη διαδικασία για να σχεδιάσουν μια ανεμογεννήτρια γύρω από τις ανάγκες μιας κοινότητας, και για να φτιάξουν ένα μοντέλο σε ομάδες.

Εξερευνώντας το Υδατικό Βιοσύστημα

Οι μαθητές μαθαίνουν θεμελιώδεις τεχνικές βιολογίας για να διερευνήσουν το τοπικό υδατικό βιοσύστημα με πρακτικό…Περισσότερα πειραματικό και δημιουργικό τρόπο. Με τη χρήση μικροσκοπίων, εντοπίζουν διαφορετικούς οργανισμούς που υπάρχουν στο νερό και παρακολουθούν την ανάπτυξή τους, διερευνούν τη σχέση μεταξύ των οργανισμών που υπάρχουν στο νερό και των τοπικών συστημάτων οικολογίας / ζωής.

Υδροκίνηση: Ώθηση Σκαφών με Ηλεκτροεγκεφαλογράφημα

Οι μαθητές χρησιμοποιούν έννοιες μηχανικής και προγραμματισμού για τον προγραμματισμό και τη βαθμονόμηση… Περισσότερα ενός συστήματος που λειτουργεί με ηλεκτροεγκεφαλογραφικά σήματα χρησιμοποιώντας ειδικά ακουστικά. Προσπαθούν να οδηγήσουν και να ελέγξουν την κίνηση των κινητήριων συσκευών σε δεξαμενές νερού ανταποκρινόμενες σε αλλαγές στις ανθρώπινες συναισθηματικές καταστάσεις.

Η Τροφη ως Καυσιμο

Σε αυτή την ενότητα, οι μαθητές εξοικειώνονται με έννοιες της χημείας και της βιολογίας για να εξερευνήσουν το θέμα…Περισσότερα της κατανάλωσης τροφής στην καθημερινή μας ζωή. Θα διερευνήσουν βασικά ερωτήματα σχετικά με την ενέργεια και την τροφή και θα πειραματιστούν χρησιμοποιώντας θερμιδομετρικά εργαλεία και φυσική άσκηση για να μελετήσουν τις διεργασίες της τροφής στο σώμα.

Όξυνση των Ωκεανών

Η ενότητα επικεντρώνεται στην οξύτητα και την επίδρασή της στο θαλάσσιο οικοσύστημα, εισάγοντας την έννοια…Περισσότερα της οξύτητας με διαλύματα, ιόντα και συγκεντρώσεις. Οι μαθητές θα έχουν διαφορετικές οικιακές χημικές ουσίες και ποτά και θα κληθούν να κάνουν υποθέσεις ως προς την οξύτητα κάθε διαλύματος πριν τα δοκιμάσουν και να αξιολογήσουν τις συνέπειες του μεταβαλλόμενου επιπέδου του pH στις χημικές και βιολογικές διαδικασίες που λαμβάνουν χώρα στον ωκεανό, όπως την αποθήκευση άνθρακα και την ασβεστοποίηση.

BWSI

Το Beaver Works Summer Institute  αποτελεί μέρος του Beaver Works, μιας συνεργασίας του MIT Lincoln Laboratory και του MIT School of Engineering που φιλοδοξεί να αποτελέσει κοιτίδα έρευνας και καινοτομίας Το Beaver Works προωθεί τη μάθηση βάσει έργου, σήμα κατατεθέν του προγράμματος σπουδών… του MIT, αξιοποιώντας την τεχνογνωσία και τον ενθουσιασμό του διδακτικού προσωπικού, των φοιτητών και των ερευνητών του MIT, καθώς και του προσωπικού του Lincoln Laboratory, προκειμένου να διευρύνει το πεδίο των συνεργασιών και των δύο αυτών ιδρυμάτων. Το BWSI προσφέρει παγκόσμιας εμβέλειας απαιτητικά προγράμματα STEM σε μαθητές Γυμνασίου και Λυκείου των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών. Όλο και περισσότερα από τα προγράμματα αυτά παρέχουν ολοκληρωμένη διαδικτυακή προετοιμασία, προσβάσιμη σε μαθητές από όλο τον κόσμο, στην οποία λαμβάνουν μέρος τα συμμετέχοντα σχολεία, ξεκινώντας από την 1η Φεβρουαρίου κάθε σχολικού έτους. Το BWSI ξεκίνησε το έργο του το 2016, με ένα μάθημα RACECAR, στο πλαίσιο του οποίου ομάδες μαθητών προγραμμάτισαν μικρά ρομποτικά οχήματα με τρόπο τέτοιο ώστε να διασφαλίζεται η αυτονομία της κίνησής τους σε μια πίστα, και, μέχρι το καλοκαίρι του 2019, επεκτάθηκε σε δέκα μαθήματα και περισσότερους από διακόσιους μαθητές. Το 2019, το BWSI εξελίχθηκε περισσότερο, καθιερώνοντας το RACECAR Mini, το οποίο απευθύνεται σε μαθητές Γυμνασίου. Το 2020, το BWSI εξελίχθηκε σε ψηφιακή πλατφόρμα, με 178 μαθητές να συμμετέχουν στο συγκεκριμένο πρόγραμμα. Στόχος του BWSI είναι να βελτιώσει την εκπαίδευση στον χώρο της μηχανικής σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο, παρέχοντας μαθήματα υψηλού τεχνικού περιεχομένου και δωρεάν στήριξη στα συμμετέχοντα μη κερδοσκοπικά ιδρύματα, συμπεριλαμβανομένων και των λυκείων και των πανεπιστημίων.

Πανελλήνιος Διαγωνισμός Ρομποτικής για μαθητές Γυμνασίου Racecar Challenge

Ο διαγωνισμός, που θα φιλοξενείται από το Pierce – American College of Greece βασίζεται στο πρόγραμμα Μέσης Εκπαίδευσης miniRACECAR, το οποίο έχει σχεδιαστεί από το Beaver Works Summer Institute του Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Σκοπός του διαγωνισμού είναι να δώσει την ευκαιρία σε μαθητές και μαθήτριες του Γυμνασίου να εργαστούν σε ομάδες, να αποκτήσουν γνώσεις με βιωματική μέθοδο, να ενισχύσουν τις ικανότητές τους στον τομέα του Προγραμματισμού, της Ρομποτικής και της Τεχνολογίας, ανεξάρτητα από προηγούμενη εμπειρία ή γνώσεις που ήδη διαθέτουν, και να καλλιεργήσουν δεξιότητες όπως επίλυσης προβλημάτων, δημιουργικότητας και ομαδοσυνεργατικότητας.

Οι συμμετέχουσες ομάδες θα κληθούν να προγραμματίσουν ένα ρομποτικό αυτοκίνητο, το οποίο θα κινείται αυτόνομα σε μία αγωνιστική πίστα.

Η ομάδα που θα διακριθεί στον ελληνικό διαγωνισμό, θα έχει τη δυνατότητα να εκπροσωπήσει τη χώρα μας στον διεθνή διαγωνισμό που θα διεξαχθεί στο Beaver Works Summer Institute του Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) στις ΗΠΑ. Η διακριθείσα ομάδα που θα συμμετάσχει στον διεθνή διαγωνισμό θα έχει την επιπλέον δυνατότητα να παρακολουθήσει το πρόγραμμα της τελευταίας εβδομάδας του BWSI στις εγκαταστάσεις του, πριν τον τελικό διαγωνισμό.

Σχεδιασμός περιεχομένου

Η κάθε ενότητα ακολουθεί μία σειρά από “αποσπάσματα / sessions” που αντικατοπτρίζουν τη project-based και διεπιστημονική προσέγγιση που έχουμε υιοθετήσει σε όλες τις εργασίες μας.

Το κάθε «απόσπασμα» αποτελείται από έναν συνδυασμό i) «σκληρής γνώσης» (επιστημονικού περιεχομένου;) που αντιστοιχεί σε συγκεκριμένο περιεχόμενο του σχολικού προγράμματος σπουδών, ii) πρακτικών/πειραματικών δραστηριοτήτων όπου αυτή η γνώση χρησιμοποιείται ή διερευνάται, και iii) ένα εργαλείο αξιολόγησης για τον μαθητή και τον εκπαιδευτικό ώστε να αποτιμήσει εάν η γνώση αυτού του «αποσπάσματος» έχει γίνει κατανοητή με τον τρόπο που επιτρέπει στον μαθητή να τη χρησιμοποιήσει στο μέλλον.

Ανάπτυξη

Πέρα από την δημιουργία πρωτοτύπου περιεχομένου από τη Μάθηση, η ανάπτυξη των ενοτήτων περιλαμβάνει την αναθεώρηση, δοκιμές παιχνιδιού (Playtesting) από εκπαιδευτικών και δοκιμές στην τάξη σε συνεργασία με καθηγητές και εκπαιδευτικούς.

Mathisi STEM Camp@Moraitis School

Σύνοψη

Το Mathisi STEM Camp διεξήχθη το καλοκαίρι του 2019 στη Σχολή Μωραΐτη. Κατά τη διάρκεια του προγράμματος, οι μαθητές διδάχθηκαν με την «μέθοδο ΜΙΤ» με μια αλληλεπιδραστική και ολοκληρωμένη μαθησιακή προσέγγιση. Είχαν την ευκαιρία να διευρύνουν τις γνώσεις τους στα πεδία του STEM (Επιστήμη, Τεχνολογία, Μηχανική και Μαθηματικά) και στη συνέχεια να χρησιμοποιήσουν αυτές τις γνώσεις με σκοπό να αναπτύξουν λύσεις σε πραγματικά προβλήματα. Οι μαθητές δούλεψαν σε ομάδες για να σχεδιάσουν και να κατασκευάσουν καινοτόμα projects τα οποία στη συνέχεια μοιράστηκαν με την κοινότητα και τις οικογένειές τους. Τόσο οι εκπαιδευτές του ΜΙΤ όσο και οι Έλληνες εκπαιδευτικοί που συνεργάστηκαν στο θερινό πρόγραμμα χρησιμοποίησαν περιεχόμενο και υλικά που αναπτύχθηκαν από το MIT και προσαρμόστηκαν για τις ανάγκες του θερινού προγράμματος STEM στην Ελλάδα. Τα μέλη της Mathisi έλαβαν υποστήριξη από το J-WEL για το σχεδιασμό του θερινού προγράμματος και για την επιλογή εκπαιδευτικών από την Ελλάδα που υποστήριξαν την διδασκαλία του προγράμματος. Το θερινό πρόγραμμα είχε διάρκεια 2 εβδομάδων, πραγματοποιήθηκε στην αγγλική γλώσσα και συμμετείχαν σε αυτό 60 μαθητές από 20 διαφορετικά σχολεία.

Πρόγραμμα

Η πρώτη εβδομάδα του Camp ήταν αφιερωμένη στην εκμάθηση μίας επιλογής από έξι επιστημονικές ενότητες που περιγράφονται παρακάτω και σε τρεις δραστηριότητες ανάπτυξης δεξιοτήτων (προγραμματισμός με Scratch, μοντέλα ηλεκτρονικής και εκπαίδευση σε εργαλειομηχανές). Η δεύτερη εβδομάδα ήταν αφιερωμένη στη δημιουργία ενός πρωτοτύπου και την υλοποίηση μίας εργασίας με βάση τις γνώσεις και τις δεξιότητες που αναπτύχθηκαν την πρώτη εβδομάδα. Την τελευταία ημέρα του προγράμματος, οι μαθητές παρουσίασαν τις εργασίες τους στους συμμαθητές τους και την οικογένειά τους.

Internet of Things για Υγιή Φυτά

Οι μαθητές μαθαίνουν σχετικά με τις διαδικασίες των φυτών και χρησιμοποιούν αισθητήρες για τη μέτρηση και την αξιολόγηση της…Περισσότερα υγείας και της ανάπτυξης των φυτών και τη χρήση μιας απλής γλώσσας προγραμματισμού για την εξ’ αποστάσεως παρακολούθηση και βελτιστοποίηση της κατάστασής τους, ενισχύοντας την κατανόηση των δυνατοτήτων του Internet of Things, της υγείας των φυτών και διαφορετικών μορφών ενέργειας.

Ανεμογεννήτριες και Design Thinking

H δραστηριότητα εισάγει τους μαθητές στο θέμα της αξιοποίησης της δύναμης του ανέμου για την παραγωγή ενέργειας και…Περισσότερα διερευνά κοινά θέματα που σχετίζονται με ανεμογεννήτριες, χρησιμοποιώντας βασικές έννοιες της φυσικής και της ηλεκτρολογίας. Στην ενότητα, οι μαθητές εξοικειώνονται με τη μεθοδολογία του Design Thinking, και χρησιμοποιούν τη διαδικασία για να σχεδιάσουν μια ανεμογεννήτρια γύρω από τις ανάγκες μιας κοινότητας, και για να φτιάξουν ένα μοντέλο σε ομάδες.

Εξερευνώντας το Υδατικό Βιοσύστημα

Οι μαθητές μαθαίνουν θεμελιώδεις τεχνικές βιολογίας για να διερευνήσουν το τοπικό υδατικό βιοσύστημα με πρακτικό…Περισσότερα πειραματικό και δημιουργικό τρόπο. Με τη χρήση μικροσκοπίων, εντοπίζουν διαφορετικούς οργανισμούς που υπάρχουν στο νερό και παρακολουθούν την ανάπτυξή τους, διερευνούν τη σχέση μεταξύ των οργανισμών που υπάρχουν στο νερό και των τοπικών συστημάτων οικολογίας / ζωής.

Υδροκίνηση: Ώθηση Σκαφών με Ηλεκτροεγκεφαλογράφημα

Οι μαθητές χρησιμοποιούν έννοιες μηχανικής και προγραμματισμού για τον προγραμματισμό και τη βαθμονόμηση… Περισσότερα ενός συστήματος που λειτουργεί με ηλεκτροεγκεφαλογραφικά σήματα χρησιμοποιώντας ειδικά ακουστικά. Προσπαθούν να οδηγήσουν και να ελέγξουν την κίνηση των κινητήριων συσκευών σε δεξαμενές νερού ανταποκρινόμενες σε αλλαγές στις ανθρώπινες συναισθηματικές καταστάσεις.

Η Τροφη ως Καυσιμο

Σε αυτή την ενότητα, οι μαθητές εξοικειώνονται με έννοιες της χημείας και της βιολογίας για να εξερευνήσουν το θέμα…Περισσότερα της κατανάλωσης τροφής στην καθημερινή μας ζωή. Θα διερευνήσουν βασικά ερωτήματα σχετικά με την ενέργεια και την τροφή και θα πειραματιστούν χρησιμοποιώντας θερμιδομετρικά εργαλεία και φυσική άσκηση για να μελετήσουν τις διεργασίες της τροφής στο σώμα.

Όξυνση των Ωκεανών

Η ενότητα επικεντρώνεται στην οξύτητα και την επίδρασή της στο θαλάσσιο οικοσύστημα, εισάγοντας την έννοια…Περισσότερα της οξύτητας με διαλύματα, ιόντα και συγκεντρώσεις. Οι μαθητές θα έχουν διαφορετικές οικιακές χημικές ουσίες και ποτά και θα κληθούν να κάνουν υποθέσεις ως προς την οξύτητα κάθε διαλύματος πριν τα δοκιμάσουν και να αξιολογήσουν τις συνέπειες του μεταβαλλόμενου επιπέδου του pH στις χημικές και βιολογικές διαδικασίες που λαμβάνουν χώρα στον ωκεανό, όπως την αποθήκευση άνθρακα και την ασβεστοποίηση.

BWSI (BWSI)

Το Beaver Works Summer Institute  αποτελεί μέρος του Beaver Works, μιας συνεργασίας του MIT Lincoln Laboratory και του MIT School of Engineering που φιλοδοξεί να αποτελέσει κοιτίδα έρευνας και καινοτομίας Το Beaver Works προωθεί τη μάθηση βάσει έργου, σήμα κατατεθέν του προγράμματος σπουδών… του MIT, αξιοποιώντας την τεχνογνωσία και τον ενθουσιασμό του διδακτικού προσωπικού, των φοιτητών και των ερευνητών του MIT, καθώς και του προσωπικού του Lincoln Laboratory, προκειμένου να διευρύνει το πεδίο των συνεργασιών και των δύο αυτών ιδρυμάτων. Το BWSI προσφέρει παγκόσμιας εμβέλειας απαιτητικά προγράμματα STEM σε μαθητές Γυμνασίου και Λυκείου των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών. Όλο και περισσότερα από τα προγράμματα αυτά παρέχουν ολοκληρωμένη διαδικτυακή προετοιμασία, προσβάσιμη σε μαθητές από όλο τον κόσμο, στην οποία λαμβάνουν μέρος τα συμμετέχοντα σχολεία, ξεκινώντας από την 1η Φεβρουαρίου κάθε σχολικού έτους. Το BWSI ξεκίνησε το έργο του το 2016, με ένα μάθημα RACECAR, στο πλαίσιο του οποίου ομάδες μαθητών προγραμμάτισαν μικρά ρομποτικά οχήματα με τρόπο τέτοιο ώστε να διασφαλίζεται η αυτονομία της κίνησής τους σε μια πίστα, και, μέχρι το καλοκαίρι του 2019, επεκτάθηκε σε δέκα μαθήματα και περισσότερους από διακόσιους μαθητές. Το 2019, το BWSI εξελίχθηκε περισσότερο, καθιερώνοντας το RACECAR Mini, το οποίο απευθύνεται σε μαθητές Γυμνασίου. Το 2020, το BWSI εξελίχθηκε σε ψηφιακή πλατφόρμα, με 178 μαθητές να συμμετέχουν στο συγκεκριμένο πρόγραμμα. Στόχος του BWSI είναι να βελτιώσει την εκπαίδευση στον χώρο της μηχανικής σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο, παρέχοντας μαθήματα υψηλού τεχνικού περιεχομένου και δωρεάν στήριξη στα συμμετέχοντα μη κερδοσκοπικά ιδρύματα, συμπεριλαμβανομένων και των λυκείων και των πανεπιστημίων.

Current school year (2020 / 2021) – pilot programs

Autonomous Racecar program
in collaboration with Beaver Works Summer Institute:

Together with the American College of Greece – Pierce (“ACG-Pierce”) and the Moraitis School, Mathisi introduced the middle-school race car program miniRACECAR designed and offered by the Beaver Works Summer Institute from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Lincoln Laboratory

Together with the American College of Greece – Pierce (“ACG – Pierce”) and the Moraitis School, Mathisi introduced the middle-school race car program miniRACECAR designed and offered by the Beaver Works Summer Institute from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Lincoln Laboratory. The pilot program aims to help students develop their knowledge and skills in programming, robotics and technology, linking theory to practice. Students from Gymnasium and 1st Lyceum receive instructions in the following subjects:

  Programming (Python)

  Computer Vision (OpenCV)

  Robotics (Racecar)

This year, both ACG – Pierce and the Moraitis School will have the opportunity to have one team virtually participate in BWSI’s final project and competition week ending August 1, 2021. It will be the first time that Greek students will participate in that competition.

In the works: School year 2021/2022

We are now actively working in collaboration with BWSI and ACG – Pierce, to allow any school in Greece interested in doing so to participate in the miniRACECAR program with the potential to take part in BWSI’s final project and competition week in the summer of 2022. Student teams which will register for the miniRACECAR program, successfully complete it, and wish to aim for a participation in BWSI’s final competition week in 2022 will first participate in a national competition to be held in June, with the winning team representing Greece.

Mathisi STEM Camp
@Moraitis School: An English-language day-camp developed in collaboration with the MIT Abdul Latif Jameel World Education Lab (J-WEL) and taught by MIT student educators and Greek teachers

Mathisi STEM Camp took place in the summer 2019 and was hosted by the Moraitis School. During the camp, students were taught in “the MIT way”, with hands-on, immersive learning. They had the opportunity to advance their knowledge in the STEM areas of Science, Technology,

The Mathisi STEM Camp took place in the summer 2019 and was hosted by the Moraitis School. During the camp, students were taught in “the MIT way”, with hands-on, immersive learning. They had the opportunity to advance their knowledge in the STEM areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics and then use this knowledge to develop solutions to real problems. Students worked together to design and build innovative projects that they then shared with their communities and families. Both MIT educators and Greek educators facilitated the camp, using resources and materials developed by MIT and adapted for the STEM Camp in Greece. Members of Mathisi Initiative received support from J-WEL to design the camp and select local educators, who assisted in the delivery of the program. The Camp ran for two weeks, in the English language, and was attended by 60 students from 20 different schools.

  The Camp’s first week was dedicated to learning a combination of the six science-based modules described in the boxes below and three skill-development activities (Scratch programming, electronics construction models and various tool training).

  The Camp’s second week was dedicated to prototyping and building a project on the basis of the knowledge and skills acquired or developed the first week. The last day of the camp, the students presented their project to their peers and family.

 

Wind Turbine Design & Design Thinking

This activity introduced students to the topic of harnessing the power of the wind for energy and investigates common problems associated with wind turbines, using basic concepts of physics and electrical engineering. In the module, students were acquainted to the methodology of Design Thinking, used the process to design a wind turbine around the needs of a community, and got to build a model in teams.

Internet of Things for Healthy Plants

Students learned about plant processes and used sensors to measure and evaluate plant health and growth and get to use a block-based programing language to remotely monitor and optimize their condition, fostering their understanding of the capabilities of Internet of Things, plant health and different forms of energy.

Exploring Aquatic Microbiome

Students learned foundational biology techniques to explore local Aquatic Microbiome in a hands-on, experimental, and creative manner. Through the use of microscopes, they identified different organisms present in the water and observe their development, investigating the connection between the organisms present in water and local ecology/life systems.

Waterkinesis: EEG-driven boats

Students used concepts of engineering and programing to program and calibrate an EEG-driven system using special headsets. They attempted to drive and control the motion of Lego WeDo motor-driven devices in pools of water in response to changes in human emotional states.

Food as Fuel

In this module, students got acquainted with concepts of chemistry and biology in order to explore the issue of food consumption in our everyday life. They investigated some essential questions about energy and food and experiment using calorie-measuring devices and physical activity.

Ocean Acidification

The module focused on acidity and its effect on the ocean ecosystem,  introducing the concept of acidity with solutions, ions, and concentrations. Students were given different household chemicals and drinks and were asked to make hypotheses as to the acidity of each solution before testing them and assess the consequences of the changing pH level on chemical and biological processes taking place in the ocean, such as carbon storage and calcification.

Drawing on its resources and experience, and in collaboration with local educators, Mathisi is developing a subset of the modules it had offered in its STEM camp with the support of MIT JWEL.

Content design

  Each module follows a sequence of sessions which reflects the project-based and cross-disciplinary approach we have adopted throughout our work.

  Each session is comprised of a combination of  i) “hard knowledge” corresponding to specific content of the national curriculum, ii)  hands-on activities where that knowledge is used or experimented, and iii) an assessment tool for the student and teacher to assess whether the knowledge of that session has been understood in the manner that allows the student to use it going forward. 

Development

Beyond Mathisi’s prototyping, the modules development includes reviewing, teacher play-testing and in-class testing in collaboration with teachers and educators

BWSI (Beaver Works Summer Institute)

BWSI offers rigorous, world-class STEM programs for middle and high school students from across the United States. An increasing number of these programs include a fully virtual online preparation, open to students internationally, which is attended by participating schools during the school year starting February 1. BWSI started in 2016, with a RACECAR course, where teams of students programmed small robotic cars to autonomously navigate a racetrack. Every year, more project-based courses and more students are learning at BWSI. In 2019, BWSI created the miniRACECAR course, which was piloted for use with middle school students. In 2020 BWSI expanded again using a virtual program and now the miniRACECAR includes a simulation environment and additional lab modules.
